The award recognized his work on 16 cases in which insurers had denied coverage for mental health services that the children’s treatment required and the persistence with which he helped those families obtain the care their policies entitled them to.

The recognition honored his dedication to families raising children with autism who encountered insurance coverage barriers, and his role in resolving 16 cases in which coverage for essential mental health services had been denied.
Sixteen families, sixteen denials resolved
In each of the 16 cases, an insurer had denied coverage for services that formed part of the child’s treatment plan. Baldrich worked with the families to understand the basis of each denial, to assemble the documentation the insurer required and to pursue the appeals and reconsiderations available under their policies until coverage was restored. The award acknowledges that sustained effort and the families whose access to care depended on it.
For a family raising a child with autism, a coverage denial adds financial pressure and uncertainty to the daily responsibilities of care. The language of a denial letter is technical, the deadlines for appeal are short and the services at stake are often those on which the child’s progress depends. Resolving a denial requires knowledge of the policy, of the insurer’s procedures and of the regulatory protections that apply and it requires an advocate who does not withdraw after the first refusal.
